TAG BOOK LAUNCH AT SUC: “The Tantramar Association of Grandm/others will be launching the long awaited book Powered by Love: A Grandmothers’ Movement to End AIDS in Africa, published by Goose Lane Editions. The book was written by Joanna Henry with Ilana Landsberg-Lewis and photographer Alexis MacDonald. Joanna and Alexis visited eight African countries, interviewing and photographing hundreds of grandmothers (including Sarah Obama, Barack Obama’s grandmother) who, with the support of their sisters in Canada and now around the world, are raising their grandchildren and rebuilding their communities. Our launch will be Friday, October 20th at 7pm at the Sackville United Church. The speakers will be Philister Andiege and Beatrice Onyango, grandmothers who work with Pendeza Africa (PENAF), Kenya and Joanne Kepher, Project Director with PENAF, as well as the author Joanna Henry.
TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES: St. Paul’s Anglican once again hosts this sale of beautiful, fairly-traded gifts benefitting artisans from more than 30 developing countries. Setup on Thursday, Oct 26 beginning at 6pm. Sale on Friday Oct 27 10am-8pm and Saturday Oct 28 from 10am-4pm. Volunteers for setup and sales are always greatly appreciated. Another Tragedy that Needs Our Care: On Thursday Sept 7, 2017, close to midnight, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck off the pacific coast of Mexico causing devastation in the state of Oaxaca. At the time of writing NBC News reported that over 90 people were killed in all of Mexico by the earthquake…71 of whom were in Oaxaca! Oaxaca has special significance for us enjoy Just Us! Coffee as this has been an area that has been the focus for many small projects over the past 12 years. If you would like to support relief efforts donations can be made made payable to the Parish of French Village (Oaxaca Relief) as:

Independent Grocery Tapes: This fund-raising program will be discontinued by the end of November, therefore, please turn in all of your Independent tapes no later than November 15th. There is a basket on the shelf just inside the Sackville United Church entrance for this. UCW will continue to collect pop tabs, bread tabs, used postage stamps with a 1/4″ border and the front cover of used greeting cards. Thank you to everyone who supports this program.
PRAYER BENCH PROGRAMME ON DEATH AND DYING: In October you are invited to gather over a four week period (one hour per week) to walk through a programme on death and dying as developed by Janice MacLean. The exact time and dates will be decided later. If you are interested please write your name on the sign-up sheet on the wall near the kitchen area. BEER AND HYMNS: Next on October 29th at 7pm at Ducky’s Pub. Theme is “Giving Thanks”. Beer and Hymns will be continuing through the fall! September 24, October 29 (new date!), November 26, and Christmas Carols on December 17!

Coming Up this Fall at SPC
Tuesday & Wednesdays: Spiritual Literacy Group. Using resources from Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat this small group (and another on Wednesday evenings) will explore spiritual attitudes and practices that can contribute to living lives of meaning: attention, gratitude, kindness, play and the list goes on. On each Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening we will explore the same theme – so, if you can’t make a Tuesday morning come on Wednesday evening or vice versa.

FOODGRAINS BANK SERVICE FOR THANKSGIVING: On October 8, Margaret Tusz-King will be leading a service on a theme of food, hunger, and the work of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
THANKSGIVING HARVEST TABLE: As has been our tradition these past few years, on Thanksgiving Sunday (Oct 8) we invite the congregation to bring in “harvest” items, both fresh and canned that will be used to create a harvest display for the service, and which will then be donated to the food bank. Unfortunately, no homemade canned or baked items can be used, per food bank regulations.
WALK THE TALK: On October 15 at 1pm, we are invited to stand in solidarity with Canada’s Indigenous peoples: they are our neighbours and partners in seeking justice and right relationship with ourselves and our environment.
COMMON VISION CONCERT: Coming on November 5 at 3pm, a musical ecumenical event featuring the music of Ron Klusmeier (and others) along with information on the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. The event will feature a mass choir made up of singers from several Sackville churches, along with congregational singing.
WONDER CAFÉ: On October 29, our worship will include a time for community conversation with student activist Aidan Legault on “The Future of Faith”.

We the community of Sackville United Church feel called to proclaim and live the call of Jesus in our midst.

We will join with all people who seek justice, compassion for all the earth, and, love and peace for all people.
In our Song of Faith we celebrate how relationship has taken us from creation through the prophets and the ministry of Jesus. The need for relationship calls us to follow the prompting of the Spirit. We open ourselves to be vulnerable so that through our work of affirmation we may all be one in every aspect of membership, ministry and life experience within our Sackville United Church community.
