Announcements for Feb 16, 2024

We Gather in Community

We gather in community each Sunday at 11AM both in-person at Sackville United and online via our Facebook Page. Mask-wearing and distancing are encouraged but not mandatory. For those not on Facebook but wishing to watch online, a link to the video of the service will be posted on the church website in the days immediately following the service.

This Sunday, February 18th is the first Sunday of Lent and we will share communion as part of our gathering. If you are joining from home via Facebook Live, ensure that you have some bread and juice available so you can share in the breaking of bread.

International Women’s Day Project

International Women’s Day: March 8th, 2024

When women are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. With this in mind and in order to aid women in distress, we are asking you to donate items like soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, feminine hygiene products, deodorants, mouthwash, winter scarves and mitts, new women’s underwear, etc.  Financial donations gratefully accepted.  We will gather these items in the Quiet Room until March 5th. We will share these items with Autumn House (located in Amherst which serves Sackville), Ensemble Moncton, Tantramar High School Pantry, Mount Allison Food Bank and Sackville’s Food Bank. Thank you in advance for your support of this project: Anne Pirie, Catherine Gaw, Elsie MacDonald

National Affirming | PIE Day 2024

Celebrate National Affirming/PIE Day on March 14, 2024! Why PIE? PIE = Public. Intentional. Explicit. Those are the standards we hold ourselves to as we seek to welcome all and live into being Affirming, Welcoming, and Inclusive people and communities.

The theme for PIE Day 2024 is: PIE in the Public Square! What does it look like to live out PIE beyond the walls of our own ministries or organizations, and into our communities, streets, and city halls? This is what we will explore and celebrate in 2024!

Would you like to assist the Affirming Committee in its PIE Day activities? Contact Stephen Poirer or Janet Hammock!  Together might we strive to be Public, Intentional, Explicit, in our Inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ People

Community Care and Support

Coffee with Open Sky Wednesdays at 10AM

Coffee and conversation is held every Wednesday morning at 10am at Sackville United. Bring your appetite for delicious baked goods and conversation - all are welcome!  An important reminder that if public schools are closed, there will be no coffee and conversation that week.

Parents and Tots Thursdays from 9:30 to 11AM

We gather at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. There is no charge, and volunteers are present to assist with childcare. Bring your young ones for a time of community, play and fellowship (and a chance to chat with other grownups!).

Silent Prayer Circle  2nd Thursday @ 7PM | 4th Thursday @ 9AM

People of all ages and walks of life are invited to gather for a time of silent prayer in the sanctuary for approximately 15-20 minutes. This offers an intentional way to hold in prayer all those persons in our lives for whom we have care and concern. And an understanding that we all carry some heaviness in our lives.  All are welcome.

Benevolent & Affirming Funds

These two funds allow Sackville United to respond to individual needs of those in our local community.  The Affirming Fund is intended for local LGBTQ2+ persons needing assistance - this includes support for gender affirming care (legal changes of name and/or gender, LGBTQ2+ related medical expenses not covered by health insurance, etc.) and other areas in which LGBTQ2+ persons might be of need.

Both of these funds exist by virtue of your generous donations.  Contributions can be made regularly through PAR (contact the church office to update), by e-transfer, or by indicating the name of the fund to which you wish to contribute on your offering envelope.

Opportunities to Serve

Contribute to the Community: There are a number of positions within our executive and other committees that we are seeking to fill at this year's annual meeting.  If you are called to volunteer, or have a suggestion of someone who might wish to be nominated, please contact the church office or reach out to Rev. Lloyd.

Sackville Food Bank: Items for the Food Bank can be dropped off at the Church during office hours or on Sunday morning. You can also support the Food Bank through your offering envelope. All donations are passed on to the Food Bank directly. The Food Bank is also a wonderful place to serve others through your time and talents!

Worship at the Drew:  You are invited to join Lloyd and Jennie on the first Sunday of each month at 3PM to share in community with the resident. Bring your voice to share in song and your heart to share love and care. Masks are strongly encouraged and are available just inside the entryway.

Share in Leadership at a Sunday Gathering: Would you be interested in reading on Sunday Morning (including, on some mornings, lighting the Christ Candle)? You may sign up on the list on the Circles of Service Board or by calling the Church office.  On Thursday afternoon the Church Office will communicate with you and provide you with the specific text(s) you will be asked to read, including the possibility of a selection of modern wisdom in the form of a quote from a current text.  A sign-up list for Scripture from January - March 2024 is posted on the circles of service board, and we are still seeking readers for March 10 & 17.

Sackville United Church Choir:  The choir practices regularly on Thursday evenings from 5 to 6pm on Thursday evenings. All are welcome - no audition or experience is necessary, nor is mandatory attendance.  The choir also meets starting at 10:15am or 10:20am on Sundays.  Come make a joyful noise with us!
