ANNOUNCEMENTS for June 10, 2018 – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLOSING AND BBQ: This Sunday we celebrate the anniversary of the formation of the United Church, which is particularly poignant as we move towards potential major changes in the structure of our church body.  Also at SUC we celebrate another year of exploration, discovery and faith in our Sunday School before we break for summer pause.  Following the 11am service there will be a BBQ with hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers – all are welcome to attend!

FOOD BANK SUNDAY:  Sunday June 17 is the next food bank Sunday for the Pastoral Charge. We are asked to bring our offerings of non-perishable food items or consider a monetary contribution to the food bank to help meet the immediate needs of our neighbours and friends, even as we continue to address the underlying injustices that lead to long-term food insecurity.  Of need this month are: Large cans of vegetables, Ritz & Triscuit Crackers, Spaghetti Sauce, Instant Coffee and Toilet Paper.

Conversation Café and Potluck at SUC:  On the last Sunday of the month, we welcome a special guest speaker to help us explore our faith in a different way, followed by a potluck.  The next conversation café will take place on June 24, with special guest Dawn Ferris.

SPECIAL MUSIC AND SUMMER PAUSE AT UPPER SACKVILLE:   On June 24 we welcome special musical guests to Upper Sackville for our final service before our summer pause.  Regular services will resume on the Sunday following Labour Day.

BEER AND HYMNS:  Beer and Hymns will run throughout the summer on the last Sunday of the month at 7pm.  Coming next on June 24 – our theme will be “summer favourites”.  Don’t hesitate to pass on your hymn requests to the church office!

SUMMER SERVICES AND OFFICE HOURS AT SPC: Summer Services for the Pastoral Charge will be held at 10am at Sackville United.  The church office will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 9am-12pm.  We look forward to seeing you!

OFFERING ENVELOPES AVAILABLE: Are you interested in having offering envelopes, or in receiving a charitable receipt for your contributions?  Please speak to the church office, or simply write your name and address and attach it to your contribution.

Counselling Services Available:  Would you or someone you know like to talk through a problem? Narrative Counselling offered by Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt is available on Thursdays in the Mt.A Chapel Office. To book an appointment contact:  rbrownhewitt@mta.ca.  Robyn is the UCC Campus Minister in the Multifaith Services Office of Dalhousie University. This year she is enrolled in the Master of Narrative Therapy & Community Work degree program through the University of Melbourne which requires that counselling practicum hours be completed every week. And so, in addition to counselling hours at Dal, she has also been offering counselling services to Mt. A students, staff and the wider community (with the agreement of Mt. A Chaplain, Rev. John Perkin) since the beginning of February 2018.

PAPER COPIES OF ONLINE MATERIALS:  For those who are not tech savvy or who do not own a computer, paper copies of Lloyd’s Monday Musings and other web-only material are available through the church office.

Prayers for the Community: Is there someone or something you would like held or lifted up in prayer this month?  Our prayer circle is ready to hear your concerns and joys and pray for them – please send your messages to Mora MacDonald at morabullydog@yahoo.ca.  All requests are kept in confidence among the group, who are always mindful of your privacy.

GETTING IN TOUCH WITH REV.  LLOYD: Looking to get in touch with Lloyd?  He can be reached at spcminister@nb.aibn.com or by calling (506) 940-1151.

John 17:1-2, 6, 17-23

Psalm 100 (p.823, Scottish Psalter) O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing, VU 326 One Bread, One Body VU 467 Offertory Response: Goodness is Stronger than Evil (on screen) Let Us Build a House, MV 1, v.1, 3-5

GO Project Children’s Day Camp: This summer, Sackville United Church will partner with the United Church’s GO Project to host a Children’s Adventure Day Camp! The camp will take place July 23-28, 9:00am to 4:00 pm (lunch provided). It is for children going into Grade 2 to finishing Grade 7.

At the GO Project day camp, participants and leaders engage in fun, meaningful activities in their communities and learn about how they are being called into action in their own lives. Days include visiting local community sites (e.g. Open Sky Cooperative), playing games, making crafts, exploring faith, peace, and justice through stories and service projects, and building relationships in a safe, intentional community.

How to get involved:

  1. Spread the word!

  2. Register your child on-line! Choose the “Maritime Region” tab and then Sackville United Church at http://www.thegoproject.ca/about-childrens-adventure-camps/

  3. Sponsor the camp: we hope that our church community will subsidize the camp registration costs so that families only need to pay $50/child. Can you donate to help cover expenses?

  4. Volunteer to make lunch for participants.

Andrea Beverley and Julien Desrochers are the liaison between SUC and the GO Staff. Contact them at abeverley@mta.ca and juliendesrochers1@gmail.com.

Exciting News!

The Executive of Sackville United Church is excited to announce that Sackville United Church has been awarded a $10,000.00 Embracing the Spirit grant to support an innovative ministry: A Social Justice Liaison.

The Social Justice Liaison will serve to support the building of cooperative working relationships in the areas of social justice between Sackville United Church and the student led social justice groups on the campus of Mount Allison University.
