Musings, Oct 15th 2018: Not to be served but to serve…

This coming Sunday, following the schedule of readings in the Revised Common

Lectionary I will ponder the story as told in Mark 10:35-45 where James and John seek to get Jesus to have them sit one at his right and the other at his left and Jesus responds “You do not know what you are asking…” and reminds them yet again that he “came not to be served but to serve…”

What does it mean to be a servant community in 2018? Where are the margins we are called to stand at?

On Sunday October 28th Sackville United Church, under the leadership of the Executive, will be holding a Wonder Café for the purpose of exploring our vision for ministry for the future. The gathering will begin at 10AM and finish at 12PM. We will begin with a brief time of worship followed by an interactive experience with feedback and discussion, ending with an opportunity for a group of volunteers to take the material that is generated to the next step.

To assist in the worship segment of this gathering please send a photo that captures ‘the joy and pain of daily living’ to lloydabruce@icloud.com. Lloyd will use these in creating the prayers and slides.

Also, as we will be using http://www.menti.com as a means of collecting data please bring your phone or tablet and be prepared to join the WiFi network when you arrive. The code for the presentation will be available on the screen.

Please, plan now to take part in this important event as we consider the shape and focus of our ministry of service into the future.

Looking Ahead

This morning was spent in Moncton attending to some folk in hospital and taking part in the Pastoral Relations Committee Meeting – likely the last one in my role as Chair of Pastoral Relations for Chignecto Presbytery.

On Tuesday after my stint in the gym I’ll be engaged in a couple of pastoral visits followed by a conference call and that evening I’ll meet with the Sackville United Church Executive for their regular Business Meeting.

On Wednesday I’ll be in the office most of the day. Later in the afternoon I’ll check in the youth who gather in the Queer Room and at 6PM I hope to see some of you out for the Ridiculous Journey series. Corn Chowder and fresh bread at 6PM and at 7PM (or a bit sooner – depending on how fast we eat) we explore Jesus: The Revolutionary with Nadia Bolz-Weber and Ann Voscamp.

Thursday is the 2nd Annual Mount A Pow Wow – and excellent opportunity for those of us who are working toward reconciliation to interact with Indigenous folk and learn of their cultures and traditions. On Thursday evening I will gather with my Spiritual Journey group.

Friday will be a day off – but I may try and attend the installation of the new President of Mount Allison.

On Saturday afternoon at 3PM I will officiate at the Funeral Service for Helen Fraser at Campbell’s Funeral Home.

Sunday is Food Bank Sunday.  We gather at 9AM at Upper Sackville and 11AM at Sackville United.  You are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to share with the Food Bank. Following the 11AM gathering at Sackville United Church the Affirm Committee will meet for a debriefing and some conversation about next steps. Later Sunday afternoon, at 3PM there is a Covenanting Service at Mountain View United Church as they begin to share in ministry with the Rev. Debra Baker.
