We hope that you are well. If you are in need - physically, spiritually, or otherwise - don't hesitate to reach out to us by phone (506-940-1151) or email (suc@nb.aibn.com). We are here for you and for each other!
Sunday Worship: Our Regular Sunday Worship is held at 11am (note the shift back to our fall/winter/spring schedule!) both in-person at Sackville United and online via our SUC Facebook Page. Mask-wearing and distancing are encouraged but not mandatory. For those not on FB but wishing to watch online, a link to the video of the service will be posted on the church website in the days immediately following the service.
Back from summer pause
As summer comes to a close (where did the time go?) groups that have taken a summer pause are now starting back up again:
Fall Church Office Hours: Beginning September 4, the church office will resume normal hours on Tuesday/Thursday from 12-4:30pm. In case of any changes to regular office hours due to illness or other circumstances, a notice will be posted on the church FB page and, when possible, on the front doors as well.
Senior's Lunch Group: Seniors' Fellowship Noon Luncheons will begin again on Tuesday, September 19 at Sackville United Church. We will meet the third Tuesday after that which will be October 17, November 21, December 19. Seniors should bring a paper bag lunch and tea/coffee will be provided.
Sackville United Church Choir: The choir will have its first rehearsal on Tuesday, September 12 at 5pm in the Sanctuary. Our first Sunday will be our Affirming Anniversary service on Sunday, September 17th.
Pathfinders at SUC: The pathfinders will meet on Tuesday evenings 6-8pm beginning September 5th.
Worship at the Drew: Worship at the Drew will resume the first Sunday of every month beginning on Sunday, October 1 at 3pm.
Coffee and Conversation with Open Sky: following the harvest at the farm, coffee and conversation will resume (time/date TBA but likely Wednesday mornings once again) at SUC. Stay tuned for an exact start date, likely in early/mid-October.
Parents and Tots: Parents and Tots meets Thursday Mornings from 9:30am to 11:00am at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. There is no charge, and volunteers are present to assist with childcare. Bring your young ones for a time of community, play and fellowship (and a chance to chat with other grownups!).
Preacher's "Help Group" (Scripture Study): meeting on Tuesdays at 10:30am via zoom. Speak to Rev. Lloyd for more details.
Quakers, Memory Cafe, etc.: TBA.
School Supplies Fundraiser UPDATE: Aware that there are those in need in our community, we at Sackville United each year contribute financial donations for children in need at Salem Elementary School.
As of last Sunday, we have raised approximately $850. For this we are grateful. Monetary donations to this appeal may be made directly through Sackville United in our usual ways: by e-transfer to suc@nb.aibn.com, at the church office during regular office hours (Tuesday/Thursday 12-4:30), or in the offering plate during Sunday Gatherings.
Our appeal will continue until the end of this week (Sunday, September 10th).
In the past it has been our practice at Sackville United to donate school supplies and/or financial donations to Salem Elementary School so that the school might better provide for children in need who attend classes at that school. It has been suggested by Salem Elementary School that because of the great and expanding needs this year, that our donations be monetary only.
According to The Human Development Council of New Brunswick info@sjhdc.ca:
16.6 % of New Brunswick’s youth and children under the age of 17 live in poverty. That is approximately 23,000 or nearly one in five of the total number of youth and children under the age of 17 in New Brunswick. 13% of children and youth in Sackville, New Brunswick live in poverty. The average cost of materials (not including backpacks, lunch boxes, gym shoes and clothing) for each child beginning the school term at Salem Elementary School is $80 - $90.
Any support given to this need in our wider community is greatly appreciated.
Sackville United Pride Week: Join us this September as we celebrate Pride together in Sackville! A fuller list of activities and opportunities will be available in coming weeks, but a couple of important SUC highlights include the Affirming Anniversary service on Sunday September 17, and the book launch of "Len and Cub" (postponed from last year) at Sackville United on Friday, September 22 at 7pm. All are welcome!
Prayer Bench Group Subscription: We have purchased a group subscription to Rev. Janice MacLean's "Prayer Bench" for the year, including a number of individual email "retreats" and series. If you are interested in receiving these resources please contact the church office.
Scripture/Announcement Readers Needed for Summer Services: READERS NEEDED FOR Septmber 17 & 24, as well as many other Sundays in October/November! Would you be interested in reading on Sunday Morning? You may sign up on the list on the Circles of Service Board or by calling the Church office. On Thursday afternoon the Church Office will communicate with you and provide you with the specific text(s) you will be asked to read, including the possibility of a selection of modern wisdom in the form of a quote from a current text.
Care and support for one another in Community: People of all ages and walks of life are invited to gather for a time of silent prayer in the sanctuary two evenings a month on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7pm for approximately 15-20 minutes. This offers an intentional way to hold in prayer all those persons in our lives for whom we have care and concern. And an understanding that we all carry some heaviness in our lives. All are welcome.
“Community is first of all a quality of the heart. It grows from the spiritual knowledge that we are alive not for ourselves but for one another” * *Henri Nouwen
What's New at Broadview: The United Church magazine has a variety of topical articles on subjects that reflect many of the interests and initiatives of our congregation. Please contact the church office to renew your subscription if you have not already and/or to sign up through our discounted group subscription rate of only $25/year. New subscriptions can be added at anytime of year!
How long COVID is shining a new light on chronic fatigue syndrome New books by LGBTQ2S+ Muslim authors prove you can be queer and follow Islam How over-policing Black children can damage their mental health — and future
Treasurer Wanted!: After many years of faithful service as our church and pastoral charge treasurer, Chrystal Schipper-Everill will soon be retiring from her position. She has generously offered to stay on beyond the end of her term to train a new treasurer. Much of the day-to-day finances, accounting, and document preparation are prepared in the church office. Some of the main duties of the treasurer include:
- preparing the annual budget
- providing oversight and financial reports
- serving on the executive
Please speak to Chrystal or contact the church office for more information.
Games Night at SUC: On the second Tuesday and third Thursday of the month from 6-8pm, a small group are gathering at SUC to play RPG (role play) and other games. If you are interested in joining this group, please speak with Christy Watts.
Cell Phones Needed for Ensemble Moncton: Are you upgrading to a newer model and have a spare phone sitting in a drawer somewhere? Ensemble Moncton provides cellphones to their clients to connect them to services and the community. The clients work closely with the Wellness Navigator at Ensemble to access services in health, justice and social sectors. Funding is very hard to access for cellphone provision because of the harmful assumptions placed on individuals dealing with addictions and substance use. Drop off phones at ENSEMBLE, 80 Weldon Street, Moncton, daily between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. Phone (506)859-9616 if more information is required. Any cell phones (and chargers!) dropped off at the church office will be brought to Moncton by Jennie or Rev. Lloyd.
Thank you to those who have donated cell phones so far. Ensemble will ensure that all data/information is wiped from phones donated before they are distributed.
